Dubuque Man Headed To Prison

A Dubuque man is going to federal prison for providing drugs to a man that overdosed. Documents from federal court in Cedar Rapids say 29 year old Michael Stevenson was sentenced to 16 years in prison Monday after a jury found him guilty in April of conspiracy and distribution of heroin and crack cocaine. Evidence showed that Stevenson conspired to distribute crack cocaine from January 2017 to September of that year. Adam Birch died from a drug overdose with drugs he bought from Stevenson in February 2017. Following Birch’s death Dubuque police located more than 300 text messages to Stevenson, the majority of them being drug-related. The judge in Stevenson’s trial found that he obstructed justice by threatening a witness as well as lying during his testimony. Stevenson admitted to selling drugs for 2-to-3 years and kept selling them even after Birch’s death. In addition to the prison sentence, Stevenson was fined $500 and order to make restitution of more than $13,000. He will also be placed on 3 years of probation once he is out.
