Dubuque Man Charged In Fatal Crash

A Dubuque man is awaiting extradition back to the state after police arrested him this week in Minnesota in connection with a fatal motorcycle crash that killed his wife last year. 40 year old Shannon Katka was taken into custody Wednesday by Albert Lea police on a warrant from Dubuque charging him with homicide by vehicular operation under the influence. Katka is also expected to face more charges when he gets back to Dubuque. Court records say on August 29th, Katka was driving his motorcycle north on East 16th Street. As he was approaching the entrance ramp to US Highway 61/151, he lost control of the cycle and crashed. His passenger, 43 year old Shelly Brenke was ejected. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Katka was treated at Finley Hospital. Traffic camera footage showed Katka cutting off another vehicle as he approached the ramp just prior to the crash. He admitted to consuming alcohol over a five hour period leading up to the fatal accident. His bond was set at $250,000 cash only.
