Dubuque Low-Income Students And Suspensions

New state data details chronic absenteeism and breaks down suspensions and expulsions for every school in the state and Dubuque’s data mirrors most of the state. According to the data, a disproportionate number of black and minority students in Dubuque miss at least 10-percent of school days. Those students are also suspended or expelled more often than white students. District equity liaison Mae Hingtgen says those students come to school with more trauma and risk factors than others and the district gives teachers training in how to better help those students. The data also shows that low-income students see the highest rate of discipline issues, accounting for 76 percent of all suspensions and expulsions in Dubuque.
