Dubuque Dr. Raising Funds For Marshallese

A Dubuque doctor is raising money to help Marshallese families who don’t have insurance, but have loved ones diagnosed with COVID-19. People from the Marshall Islands have protective legal status in America but can’t access Medicaid and rely on charity for medical care if they don’t get insurance from their jobs. There are about 800 Marshallese in Dubuque and many are still learning English and work in low-wage jobs and most do not have private health insurance. When Dr. Mark Janes learned that some people in the Marshallese community had contracted the coronavirus, he wanted to do something to help, so he started an online donation page on GoFundMe. The community has responded by donated thousands of dollars and Janes says he didn’t expect people to respond this way. He tells our coverage partners at KCRG TV he hopes people will continue to support the Marshallese in Dubuque. Right now Marshallese cannot access Title 19, also known as Medicaid. Their legal status in this country allows them to work, but not access programs like public health insurance.
