Dubuque Deer Hunt Extended to Further Study CWD

Dubuque area deer hunters will get two extra weeks to hunt as state conservation officials try to identify additional cases of a fatal deer illness. Chronic Wasting Disease was found in a deer in Dubuque County earlier this month. Following that discovery, the state Department of Natural Resources is looking to collect additional deer samples and test them for the disease. They’ve granted an extension to the deer hunting season in the Dubuque area. Hunting will resume this Saturday, and the extended season will close on February 10. Participating hunters will be required to provide a tissue sample from any deer they kill. Hunters are restricted to using shotguns, muzzleloaders, or rifles shooting straight walled cartridges in the area around Dubuque. Within the city, only bow hunting will be allowed.
