Dubuque Casinos Making Comeback From Virus

Since they were given the OK from the Governor to reopen in June amid the coronavirus pandemic, both the Diamond Jo and Q casinos are seeing some positives, but they also realize there is a ways to go. Q general manager Brian Rakestraw says in the month of August the Dubuque market saw a decline of almost 13 percent. 33 percent of the gaming markets in Iowa fared well in August. Rakestraw says even with a decline in overall gaming, hotel and restaurant revenue, there was a positive growth in net income last month. Q President and CEO Jesus Alvies says since they reopened they have brought back 96 percent of their employees. Some employees have been reassigned to other duties. Q chief financial officer Bill Eichhorn says their gross gaming revenue was down 7.8 percent last month, and total revenue was down 16.2 percent. Net income from operations was up 31.7 percent, while overall net income was up 32.9 percent compared to the same time last year.
