Donut Boy Working to Re-Open After Violations

A Dubuque donut shop owner says he will reopen today after the state shut him down for food and safety violations. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals found multiple violations in Donut Boy, located near the intersection of Asbury Road and University Avenue. Among the inspector’s findings were cockroaches, employees not wearing hair nets, and food sitting out next to chemicals. The report also said the floors and walls were dirty. Owner Edward Gau admits the store needed a deep cleaning. He said he used to have an employee that cleaned the store every night. But when that worker left, he never filled the position. The inspectors also found Gau wasn’t properly labeling allergens, like eggs and coconut. Gau is getting training on that and says he will teach his employees. He hopes to open again this morning to make the donuts for his nightly deliveries, and then open to the public Saturday morning.
