Delaware County Jail Concerns

A Delaware County official warns that if residents don’t approve a new jail soon, the state may step in. The county’s supervisors are planning to ask voters to approve a new jail after the first of the year. This would be the third time in the past decade that a jail improvement proposal has been on the ballot. The current facility can house 13 inmates, but any more than that have to be transported to a nearby county’s jail, at a cost of 50 dollars per day. But Supervisor Jeff Madlom says many of the adjacent counties also have full jails. If the county doesn’t approve an expansion soon, Madlom fears that state inspectors could close the county jail. Madlom says supervisors are considering a 40-bed facility. It’s not known how much the expansion would cost, but the last time the issue went to the voters, the county was asking for nearly 5-million dollars.
