DC Jail Taking Steps To Prevent Virus Outbreak

Transmitting the novel coronavirus is a big concern for facilities that have people living together in close quarters, and that includes jails and prisons. The ACLU of Iowa has been vocal about its’ concern for the safety of jail staff and inmates during the pandemic. Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy tells our coverage partners at KCRG TV that his office shares the same concern. For that reason they are now letting people who commit small misdemeanors leave without going to jail. Sheriff Kennedy says back in February and before the pandemic reached Iowa, the jail population was 190. Now it is down to 100. Kennedy says however, that doesn’t mean that everyone now gets a free get-out-of-jail-card. It’s still unknown whether this new practice will continue beyond the pandemic.
