DBQ Kidnapping Scam

The Dubquque Police Department Dispatch received two calls Wednesday about a disturbing scam phone call. The scammer is a male and states that he has kidnapped the potential scam victim’s daughter. The sounds of a female crying can be heard in the background and the scammer asks that money be wired for the daughter to be released. In some cases, the scammer may have the name and address of the “kidnapped” family member. This scam tactic is called Virtual Kidnapping and it is easy to become panicked and fall victim to the scam. If you receive one of these calls do not wire money and do not let the suspect scare you into making a hasty decision with money or the release of personal information. When in doubt, contact law enforcement.
