Classic American Goulash

Classic American Goulash

2 lbs. lean ground beef

1 large yellow onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, chopped

3 cups beef broth

2 15 oz. cans tomato sauce

2 15 oz. cans diced tomatoes

1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)

2 tablespoons Italian seasoning

3 bay leaves

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked

In a large pan, sauté the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking up and cooking until no longer pink.  Drain excess fat.  Add the onions and garlic and sauté until they are tender, about 5 minutes.  Add 3 cups beef broth, along with the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, bell peppers, if using, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes, if using.  Cover with a lid and allow to cook for 15-20 minutes.  Add the elbow macaroni, stir well, return the lid to the pot, and simmer for about 30 minutes.  Turn off the heat, remove bay leaves, and allow the mixture to sit about 30 minutes longer before serving.  Serve with garlic bread and a side salad.
