City Council Vacancy To Be Filled By Appointment

The Dubuque City Council met Wednesday and voted unanimously to fill the vacancy for the First Ward City Council seat by appointment. The spot is open as a result of Brett Shaw’s resignation. At-large councilman Ric Jones said appointment will be faster and less expensive to fill the seat. Mayor Roy Buol said a special election could cost about $13,000 to hold and for safety reasons during the pandemic, an appointment would be the better way to go. The council’s goal is to appoint someone to fill the spot by the end of July. If the council can’t decide who to appoint in 60 days it would be filled by a special election. Shaw’s last meeting was Monday. His term expires at the end of 2021.
