City Council Pools Stay Closed

After a 6-1 vote last night by the Dubuque City Council, the Dubuque’s municipal swimming pools will remain closed this summer. The council voted to keep Flora and Sutton pools closed amid concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public Health Specialist Mary Rose Corrigan told the council even though most restrictions have been lifted, the pandemic continues. At-large councilman David Resnick said the risk is too high to open the pools. Second Ward councilwoman Laura Rousell agreed, saying safety should come first. Brett Shaw, First Ward councilman, voted in favor of opening the pools. Had the council voted to open the pools there would have been many amenities that would have stayed shut down including the slides, high dive, playground, and lockers.
