Cherono wears crown in Boston…Dubuquer Froeschle Makes Impressive Finish
BOSTON (AP) – Lawrence Cherono has won the Boston Marathon for the first time. Cherono needed every bit of his speed to outkick two-time winner Lelisa Desisa in a sprint to the tape, passing him just steps away from the finish line to win the 123rd edition of the race in 2 hours, 7 minutes 57 seconds.
Worknesh Degefa broke away from defending champion Des Linden and the rest of the women’s pack in the Framingham flats and ran alone for the last 20 miles to claim the women’s race.
On a local note: Steven Froeschle of Dubuque had an impressive finish, the 24 year old finished in 2:33.26 which was 158 overall and it was the top time turned in by an Iowan in the race.
Others running the race and finishing from Dubuque were Ross Benner, Makon Ford, Dave Horstmann, and Sarah Milner. Other area runners also finishing were Patricia Laufenberg of Platteville, Emma Wagner of Mineral Point, and Steve Dellett of Galena.
