Cascade, Parts of Dubuque Considered “Child Care Deserts”

A recent survey has found Iowa residents, including many here in Dubuque, are struggling to find child care. Researchers with the Center for American Progress surveyed people in 22 states last year. They found that about half of the population that they studied lived in neighborhoods or communities that lacked child care services. Researchers say 24 percent of Iowa residents live in child care deserts, places where child care is scant. That figure jumps to 37 percent in rural areas. Portions of Dubuque are considered to be in one of those child care deserts. The study found that child care is also especially lacking in the Dubuque County community of Cascade.
