Dubuque County’s Major Leaguer will be suiting up much closer to home this season. Cascade native Colin Rea has signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. The 28-year-old right hander pitcher will be invited to the Cubs’ major league spring training beginning next month, but he’s expected to begin his season with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in Des Moines. Rea comes to the Cubs after spending his first eight professional seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. He made his Major League debut with the Friars in August of 2015, and spent the rest of that season and the first half of 2016 in the majors. But he hasn’t pitched at the big league level since an elbow injury and the resulting Tommy John surgery cost him the latter half of 2016 and the entire 2017 seasons. Last summer, he split time between the Padres’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates before being released by the team in November.
