Cascade High School Drama Director Retiring After 56 Year Career

After more than five decades, the curtain has fallen on the career of a Dubuque County theater director. Bob Davidshofer has been the high school drama coach in Cascade since 1962. Over a 56-year career, he guided more than one hundred productions that involved thousands of students. But after graduating a strong group of students this spring, and with a successor in place, Davidshofer believes the time is right to step aside. Davidshofer, known affectionately as “Coach” to his students, saw plays and musicals as another way to teach students how to work together. Davidshofer also hopes that being involved in drama gave students confidence they may not have otherwise gotten. While some of Davidshofer’s students went on to pursue careers in the theater, most did not. But he hopes he was able to instill an appreciation for the arts in them. Davidshofer frequently hears from former students who say that some of their fondest memories of high school come from participating in the drama program. While Davidshofer is setting aside his role as Cascade’s drama director, he will continue to coach both the boys and girls cross country teams, which he’s led to a total of 15 state championships.
