Cascade 5K to Benefit Miracle League of Dubuque

An annual fun run in Dubuque County is shifting its resources this year and will be raising money to help build a baseball field for kids of all abilities. Since 2013, the Cascade-based organization called Small Heroes, Mighty Cause has helped raise money for children with genetic disorders. In the past, proceeds from their annual 5K run/walk have gone to spinal muscular atrophy research efforts. But this year, the money will go to the Miracle League of Dubuque, which is working to build an all-abilities softball field at Veterans Memorial Park in Dubuque. Small Heroes, Mighty Cause co-founder Amanda Schlemme says the change comes as the group is anticipating its biggest event to date. Schlemme’s son, Colin, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when he was still an infant. He’s spent much of his life since then in a wheelchair, unable to play baseball with his brother and friends. But Schlemme says the Miracle League would change that. The Small Heroes, Mighty Cause 5K begins tonight at 5:30 at Riverview Park in Cascade. Following the run, there will be live music in the park’s amphitheater featuring the Adam Keith Duo.
