Cannabis Ordinance In East Dubuque

It’s been over two months since the East Dubuque city council passed an ordinance establishing guidelines for recreational cannabis businesses. One part of the ordinance requires those businesses to be located at least one thousand feet from schools, day cares, nurseries, residential day cares and pre-schools. The other part is an initial $1,500 payment for a permit and $1,500 every year after that to renew the permit. City manager Loras Herrig says their ordinance follows guidelines established by the Illinois Municipal League, and if need be the ordinance could be tweaked a bit down the road. He says the first step for potential dispensary owners to take is to apply for a license with the state. The deadline to apply was December 31st. The state is now reviewing those applications and plan to issue conditional licenses sometime before May 1st. There will only be three licenses granted for northwest Illinois, which covers nine counties. The fee is $5,000 per license. Herrig says there will be a sales tax attached to the purchase of recreational marijuana in East Dubuque. Herrig says the city is currently operating with a deficit and the additional revenue will help manage that deficit in some areas.
