With the arrival of the holiday shopping season, many of us will be leaving our vehicles unattended in larger parking lots while we shop, eat, or run errands. Lieutenant Joe Messerich with the Dubuque Police Department says it pays to make sure your vehicle’s doors are locked and the windows are secured. Messerich says with many packages being left on doorsteps it’s important to try not to leave them unattended too long. Home security systems and cameras are also a good way to foil any possible thefts. Some other tips include never leave your vehicle running and unattended with the keys inside. Do not leave valuables in a vehicle. If you must, at least hide them from public view, purses, bags, and electronics laying out make a vehicle an attractive target. While shopping after dark, if possible, park in well-lit areas.
