Bellevue Among Mississippi River Locks to Close
The Mississippi River lock at Bellevue is one of more than a half-dozen that are being closed due to flooding. The US Army Corps of Engineers announced on Tuesday that it would be closing seven locks, mostly between the Quad Cities and St. Louis. In addition to Lock and Dam 12 at Bellevue, the Corps is also shutting down the locks at Muscatine in Iowa, New Boston, Gladstone, and Quincy in Illinois, and Canton and Saverton in Missouri. A spokesman for the Corps’ Rock Island District says lock closures on the river effectively stop all traffic. The Mississippi at Bellevue is expected to crest at 20.2 feet on Saturday evening. That’s just above the “major flood” stage.
