Autopsy on Dubuque Man Inconclusive

An autopsy performed on a Dubuque man who died while in police custody this past weekend has come back inconclusive. 29 year old Alex Billmeyer was arrested by Dubuque police at around 4 pm Sunday on an outstanding warrant for escape and new charges of criminal mischief and trespass. Billmeyer was transported to the county jail. A short time later jail staff noticed that Billmeyer had become unresponsive. CRP was initiated by jail staff and Dubuque Fire and Ambulance was on scene by 4:15. Billmeyer was taken to Mercy ER where he was pronounced dead at around 5 pm. An autopsy was conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office this week and according to a release from the sheriff’s office, the preliminary results came back inconclusive and could not pinpoint the exact cause of Billmeyer’s death. Toxicology results are pending and the incident remains under investigation. The release says final autopsy results may not be available for several months.
