Astros oust Rays…Phils drop Kapler…Pats stay unbeaten…Jags owner expects Ramsey to play Sunday

HOUSTON (AP) – Gerrit Cole worked eight strong innings and the Houston Astros reached the American League Championship Series by whipping the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-1 in Game 5 of the ALDS. Cole followed his 15-strikeout performance in Game 1 of the ALDS by fanning 10 while limiting the wild-card champs to one run and two hits. Jose AltuveĀ  poked an RBI single to spark the Astros’ four-run first inning before he and Michael Brantley hit back-to-back homers in the eighth to cap the scoring.

NEW YORK (AP) – New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks could make a surprise return from elbow injury to start in AL Championship Series against Houston. The switch-hitter has not played since Aug. 3. CC Sabathia also could be back on the roster after missing the Division Series sweep of Minnesota because of a sore pitching shoulder. The 39-year-old left-hander is retiring after the postseason.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies are the eighth major league team currently without a manager after Gabe Kapler was let go today. Kapler went 161-163 in two years at the helm, including an 81-81 mark this season following the acquisitions of All-Stars Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto . The Phils have missed the postseason the last eight years since a string of five straight NL East titles.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Tom Brady is No. 2 on the NFL’s career list for passing yards and the New England Patriots are 6-0 for the first time since 2015 after thumping the New York Giants, 35-14. Brady ran for two touchdowns and threw for 334 yards to pass Peyton Manning on the all-time list. New York QB Daniel Jones had his worst game since taking over for Eli Manning in Week 3, completing just 15 of 31 passes for 161 yards and three interceptions while the Giants played without four of their top offensive weapons.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan expects cornerback Jalen Ramsey to play this Sunday. Khan told a financial news site, The Street, he had a “heart to heart” with the disgruntled defensive back earlier this week and said Ramsey is scheduled to play against New Orleans. Ramsey has practiced on a limited basis the last two days after missing seven straight because of illness, back tightness and the birth of his second daughter.
