A Gratiot, Wisconsin man and his young son suffered serious injuries Thursday evening after a truck vs buggy crash in Gratiot Township. Around 7:15 pm the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an accident in front of a residence on STH 11. The investigation revealed that an Amish open style buggy, pulled by a single horse and driven by 22-year old Elmer Stoltzfus, with his two-year-old son as passenger, was traveling westbound on STH 11, preparing to turn left into the driveway at 11263. The buggy was struck from behind by a pickup, also traveling westbound and driven by 50-year Terry Gensler, of Shullsburg, Wisconsin. Both occupants of the buggy were ejected suffering significant injuries and were both were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County. Elmer Stoltzfus was then transported to the University Hospital in Madison by Medflight. Stoltzfus’ son was transported to UW Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the truck, Terry Gensler was not injured and he was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Injury. The horse pulling the buggy was killed as a result of the crash. The buggy was demolished and the truck was severely damaged. The accident remains under investigation.
