As it’s getting colder, it’s only highlighting the need for homeless shelters in eastern Iowa. According to our coverage partners, KCRG TV, one shelter in Dubuque could be at risk of closing if it can’t get more volunteers. Almost Home is an overflow shelter inside St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on White Street. It has 12 beds and has already seen 45 men come through since September. Shelter Coordinator Chris Berlin says for volunteers, there are two shifts, 6 pm to 11 pm and 11 pm to 7 am. The shelter is open seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. If a longer shift doesn’t work for people you can bring someone else to split the shift with. Area nonprofits will refer people to Almost Home, including Dubuque Rescue Mission when it’s shelter is full, United Way, Hillcrest, and even area hospitals. Almost Home is a men’s only shelter so they are looking for male volunteers over the age of 18. To volunteer call 563-495-1353 or email email@example.com.
