BBQ Frito Chili Burgers

Barbecue Frito Chili Burger

Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce:

2 tablespoons butter

½ yellow onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup ketchup

1 ½ tablespoons tomato paste

6 oz. Dr. Pepper

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

2 ½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

¼ cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon chili powder

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper

3 tablespoons brewed coffee 

Melt butter over medium heat in a saucepan.  Add onion and garlic and sauté until soft and translucent, about 8-10 minutes.  Add remaining sauce ingredients, stir to combine.  Bring to a low boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, until sauce has thickened.  Pour sauce into a blender or food processor and puree.  Set aside to cool. 

For Burgers:

2 lbs. Cremer’s lean ground beef

½ cup Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 teaspoon seasoned salt

8 burger buns

2 cups Cremer’s homemade chili

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 red onion, sliced thinly


Heat grill to medium heat.  In a large bowl, combine ground beef, barbecue sauce, salt, and seasoned salt.  Mix until just combine (don’t over mix).  Form into 8 patties.  Grill patties about 6-8 minutes per side until cooked through.  Remove from grill and cover with foil to keep warm until serving.  While burgers are cooking, heat chili.  

When ready to assemble burgers, layer burger over bottom bun and top with chili, cheese, onion slices and  top with Fritos and top off with the top bun.  Serve.
