US Cellular-City Council

The City Council last week approved a lease agreement for US Cellular to deploy “small cell” infrastructure in Dubuque in the future. This infrastructure will use small wireless communication devices to enhance capacity in Dubuque to handle the increasing number of users and mobile devices. Mike Van Milligen, City Manager, says the agreement will address specific safety concerns by the City-for Fire and EMS mobile devices experiencing signal loss in route to a call-to area concerns for unreliable service during portions of the day.┬áDavid Lyons, Sustainable Innovations Consultant, told the council the first set of six sites will generally be located in the Kennedy Mall and NW Arterial commercial corridors before branching out in other parts of the city.┬áThese will be 4G placements which extend wireless coverage using traditional communication bandwidths, and do not include any 5G technology. Any future replacement of these 4G sites with 5G equipment would require specific application, authorization and approval by the City.
