St. Mark’s Summer Academy Helps Kids Retain Knowledge, Prepare for Upcoming School Year

A Dubuque summer academy is going beyond ensuring that kids retain what they’ve learned in school during the summer months. St. Mark Youth Enrichment’s six week Summer Heroes Academy is working to prepare kids for the upcoming school year. Beth McGorry, Outreach Coordinator at St. Mark’s, says kids who are entering kindergarten through 5th grade are participating in numerous learning experiences that will help them prepare for their next grade level. Kids are placed in a class that reflects their upcoming school year. For example a child who just finished kindergarten is placed in a first grade room. McGorry says kids who don’t do anything over the summer can lose up to six months of learning. Kids attending the academy also receive breakfast and lunch. The cost of the program is $250 per child and is based on a family’s income. About 150 kids are enrolled in this summer’s academy.
