Speeding Tickets Lead Citations During Sheriff’s Office Memorial Day Project

Deputies from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department issued more than 150 citations – most of them for speeding – during a traffic enforcement project that spanned the Memorial Day holiday. The department participated in a statewide Special Traffic Enforcement Project, or STEP, during a two-week period around Memorial Day. Over those 14 days, deputies wrote out 154 tickets. Slightly more than half of those citations were for speeding, making it, by far, project’s the most common infraction. The next most common violation was driving with a suspended or revoked license. Deputies issued 11 of those tickets. Five drunk driving arrests were made, while nine other drivers were found to have been drinking, but were not beyond the legal limit and were given a warning. Deputies also tracked seat belt usage, finding that 96 percent of motorists were properly buckled in.
