Sabula-Savanna Ferry Launches

People are once again able to travel directly between Sabula, Iowa, and Savanna, Illinois. A ferry service that will take people and vehicles across the Mississippi River between the two cities opened on Tuesday. Vehicle traffic between the two communities has been closed since late February, when an overflow bridge into Sabula was deemed unsafe. Construction delays have forced commuters between the towns to take a 50-minute detour through Clinton. But now there’s another option. Sabula Mayor Paul Figie is happy there’s another option for people to get across the river. The ferry will run from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, seven days a week, until the bridge across the river re-opens. It is free to ride, and can carry up to fifteen vehicles and 80 people.
