Man Accused in Church Crash Charged with Attempted Murder

A driver who crashed into a downtown Dubuque church while trying to run over another man is now charged with Attempted Murder. That’s one of a pair of new charges filed against 34-year-old Eric Schmidt of Bellevue. Prosecutors have also upgraded a 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief charge to 1st Degree. According to Dubuque Police, Schmidt drove a pickup truck at a man who was walking on Main Street, near its intersection with 12th Street. Schmidt initially struck the man on the sidewalk, then continued until he crashed into the concrete steps in front of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. The impact caused as much as 10-thousand dollars in damage. Interviews with Schmidt and the victim indicate that the two had been in an ongoing feud. Schmidt reportedly admitted that he drove at the other man to try to “scare” him. In addition to his new charges, Schmidt is also facing single counts of Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of Marijuana.
