Local Legislators Discuss Session at Chamber Luncheon

Lawmakers who represent the Dubuque area shared their thoughts on this year’s legislative session at a luncheon yesterday. A total of five state legislators were in attendance for the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Wrap-Up Luncheon at the Hotel Julien. State Senator Pam Jochum of Dubuque said addressing the state’s opioid crisis was a step in the right direction. Dubuque State Representative Chuck Isenhart graded the session what he described as a “generous D.” He points out that Governor Kim Reynolds said mistakes were made in the Medicaid privatization, but says none of them were addressed. According to Senator Tod Bowman of Maquoketa some good things included improving accessibility for people with mental health issues. Representative Shannon Lundgren of Peosta says aside from addressing mental health and the opioid epidemic, there were smaller accomplishments that didn’t get as much attention. Representative Andy McKean of Anamosa says like most sessions, 2018’s was a mixed bag. Outgoing State Representative Abby Finkenauer of Dubuque was invited to participate in the panel, but couldn’t due to a scheduling conflict.
