Investigation: Finkenauer Campaign Responsible for Incorrect Polling Place Texts

A Dubuque lawmaker’s campaign was responsible for text messages that gave voters incorrect polling place information. But the campaign says the mistake was a result of a vendor error. The Iowa Secretary of State’s office on Wednesday announced that an investigation into the text messages revealed that they originated from Abby Finkenauer’s congressional campaign. But the messages were the result of an error in the campaign’s data management, and were not malicious. Dubuque County Auditor Denise Dolan says her office became aware of the text messages Tuesday morning after receiving a call from a confused voter. Her staff steered that person in the right direction. In a statement, Finkenauer Campaign Manager Joe Farrell says the campaign also took action once it became aware of the incorrect information being sent out. A second round of texts were sent, which directed voters to the polling place finder on the Secretary of State’s website.
