Flood Warning Issued for Turkey River at Elkader

Courtesy: National Weather Service

This weekend’s rains have caused a Clayton County river to swell, prompting a Flood Warning from the National Weather Service. The warning for the Turkey River at Elkader will be in effect through at least tomorrow. The river there rose by about 6.5 feet over a 12 hour period from Saturday afternoon to early yesterday morning, when it crested just shy of 13.5 feet. That’s into the “minor flood” category. Since then, the Turkey has begun to fall back, and was measured at 12.4 feet early this morning. It’s expected to fall below the flood stage of 12 feet by this afternoon. The Mississippi River here in Dubuque has gone up about 1.5 feet since Saturday morning, and is expected to reach a depth of 12.5 feet this evening. But that’s still 4.5 feet below flood stage.
