Dubuquer to Carry Torch at National Special Olympics

Two Dubuque Special Olympians will be competing as members of Team Iowa at the National Special Olympics Games July 1-6 in Seattle. Josh Hickey and Lacey Kutch are among the 4,000 athletes from all 50 states gathering at the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium for the games. Hickey has been given the special honor of carrying the Olympic torch during the opening ceremonies Sunday afternoon. Hickey has participated in Special Olympics for 18 years and calls it the highlight of his career. He will be the first athlete to carry the torch once it arrives at the stadium. Hickey says he can’t say enough about what the Special Olympics has meant to him. Hickey will be competing in five events during the games: the 100 meters, 400 meters, shotput, long jump, and high jump. The opening ceremonies will be televised on KCRG starting at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. The games themselves are being televised by the ESPN family of networks with coverage mainly on ESPN2.
