UPDATE: Suicidal Man Prompts School Closure, Lockdown in Platteville Area

The whereabouts of a man threatening to harm himself are still unknown as law enforcement in the Platteville area have gone on alert this morning. According to the local police department, officers received a call at about 5:00 AM about a man threatening to harm himself while armed with a rifle. The man’s vehicle was later found unoccupied. Due to its location near a school, police and district leaders from the Platteville Schools chose to cancel classes for today. The rifle the man was carrying was later found by police in a local park, but his location is still unknown. Police believe he is on foot somewhere between Platteville and Belmont. Belmont schools have been placed on a “soft lockdown.” That means that classes are running as scheduled, but there is no outdoor recess. The man is a 27-year-old white male. He has short brown hair, brown eyes, stands about 5-8, and weighs 175 pounds. He was last known to be wearing a green puffy jacket and tan t-shirt. Anyone with information about the man’s location is asked to contact Platteville Police or a local law enforcement agency.
