Cavatini (4/20/2012)



1 lb. Lean Ground Beef
1 lb. Italian sausage
2 8 oz. can Italian tomato sauce
1 14.5 oz. can Italian style diced tomatoes
1 chopped sweet onion
1/4 c. red or green pepper (chopped)
1 4 oz. can sliced mushrooms
1/2 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp. garlic (minced, chopped or garlic powder)
2 jars spaghetti sauce (your favorite)
¾ cup each 3 different kinds of noodles (rotini, penne, shells..etc.)
3 Cups Mozzarella Cheese (divided)


In a large pot, boil and drain noodles according to package directions. Return to pot. Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Brown beef, sausage, red or green, or both, if using, peppers, and onions. Drain off excess fat. Turn off heat. Mix in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, garlic, 1 jar or can spaghetti sauce, and pasta. Pour into greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Top with remaining jar or can of spaghetti sauce. Top with 1 ½ cups Mozzarella cheese. Cover and bake 45-55 minutes. Remove from oven and remove cover. Add remaining 1 ½ cups of cheese and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes or until bubbly hot. Let rest 5-10 minutes, and serve.
