Commission Recommends Multi-Million Dollar Expansion for Five Flags

A Dubuque commission is recommending that the city pour up to $75 million into expanding the Five Flags Center. The Civic Center Advisory Commission yesterday reviewed the final results of a feasibility study for Five Flags. The consultant that conducted the study presented four possible scenarios for the future of the facility, ranging from minor renovations to the multi-million dollar expansion. The commission voted unanimously to pursue that option. Commission Chair McKenzie Hill says commission members heard from citizens that believe an improved arena will attract better entertainment. The proposed expansion would call for the arena to grow its seating capacity to 6,000. The building would overtake the portion of 5th Street that runs between Locust and Main Streets. The cost of the plan has been estimated between $68 million and $75 million. The City Council is expected to review the study and the commission’s recommendation at their meeting on Monday.
