Blum Hosts Opioid Conference in Dubuque

Congressman Rod Blum was in Dubuque on Monday to host a conference on the nation’s opioid epidemic. Representatives from the medical community, law enforcement, and local lawmakers were all on hand at Northeast Iowa Community College’s downtown Dubuque campus to discuss both the progress that’s been made, as well as the challenges that still exist. Joyce McDermott is the director of Psychiatric Services at Dubuque’s Mercy Hospital, home of the Turning Point Clinic. While their patients are getting clean, she says more help is still needed, particularly from insurance companies. But one perspective not often shared in discussions about opioids came from Dubuque resident Carolyn Busko. She suffers severe nerve pain and has tried nearly every drug available, finding opioids to be most effective. But she now believes her doctor is worried about prescribing them. Several medical professionals also spoke about the need for an in-patient treatment clinic in Dubuque.
