Betwell Trial Date Set

After more than two and a half years of competency hearings, it appears that a Dubuque murder suspect will finally be going on trial this spring. A Dubuque County judge has set a trial date of May 7 for 22-year-old Helmon Betwell. He’s accused of 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Sexual Abuse, and 3rd Degree Burglary in the September 2015 death of Nancy Krapfl. Betwell was initially deemed incompetent to stand trial and placed in a psychiatric facility in June of 2016. Attorneys have argued his competency four other times since then, including during a hearing earlier this month. The judge in the case has apparently decided that Betwell does have the mental capacity for a trial. Betwell is next due in court on the first day of the trial, which will take place in Davenport. His attorneys successfully argued last October that Betwell wouldn’t be able to get a fair trial in Dubuque County due to media coverage of the case.
